Tesis is a Spanish film made in 1996, and it was Alejandro Amenábar’s first full length movie, scoring him three of the nine Goyas he carries under his name nowadays to best film, the best novel director and the best original script of the year.

It’s a suspense/horror thriller following Angela, a girl studying sound and image engineering as her thesis on audiovisual violence accidentally leads her to uncover a snuff tape that may be linked to her professor’s death, and several students’ disappearances. She starts investigating along with Chema, an odd guy she met at campus who knows a lot abt snuff, and was gonna be the one lending her content for her thesis before Angela uncovered the tape.

I personally enjoyed this film! It really just. Hides and shows information from you however it likes to have you come to the same conclusion the protagonist is at any given moment- it’s one of those films that makes you shift your suspicions time and time again. It felt drawn out, but not overly since there was always something being revealed. It doesn’t hesitate to put the characters in peril, and mmaybe it is because I was watching it at 2am but I really didn’t feel it was cliche or overly typical. There is romance but it really doesn’t play a big role in the movie other than to create some slight conflict between the characters- it really isn’t dramatic in that regard. Also there was less gore than I originally thought there would be- but I’m not upset at that at all, now that I’ve watched it I think anything more would’ve been corny. Also another kinda hyper specific thing I liked is how they went out of their way to decorate Chema’s room in a way that really drills into your head the fact that it belongs to a total gore obsessed weirdo

Overall, I’d recommend it! Sadly I don’t think the film was officially dubbed to any language other than Spanish- maybe there is one out there, but I watched the OV. I do know its available on Netflix if you own a VPN and set your location to Spain, I’m just saying
